Current affiliations

I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine and the O'Brien Institute for Public Health.

Aside from my primary affiliation at the University of Calgary, I am affiliated faculty with the Program on Regulation, Therapeutics, and the Law (PORTAL) in the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics within the Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Harvard Medical School.

Research interests

I am a population health policy researcher who investigates the social determinants of (in)equitable prescription drug access and innovation, including the patent system and drug pricing. Specifically, I am working to establish a “Rx Equity Observatory” that is dedicated to (i) focusing more research and development activity on health issues affecting those bearing societies’ largest disease burdens and to (ii) understanding how to most effectively rollout new health technologies to society in a way that does not further exacerbate health inequities, but rather alleviates them. While my work is situated within the health sector, I am keen to contribute to building health innovations that engage other sectors and domains, especially through engaging in healthy public policy analysis processes with local stakeholders. More recently, I have been working with a team of colleagues to trial social prescribing initiatives, including a subsidized healthy food prescription program, to augment traditional pharmacologic therapies patients who are experiencing food insecurity and who are also at risk for diabetes.

Academic background

My postdoctoral work was at PORTAL (2017-2018). My PhD is in Population Health (Departments of Epidemiology and Community Medicine and of Common Law, University of Ottawa, Canada, 2017). I also have academic training in global health affairs and international political economy (Masters) as well as philosophy (Undergraduate).

Methodological approaches

Given my interdisciplinary background, I'm at home in the field of population health and health policy where we investigate intersectoral topics that make a difference for health and health inequities. I am a mixed methods, interdisciplinary researcher interested in collaborative projects on topics that have implications for health (e.g., how innovation systems, such as the patent system, interact with health systems).

Personal

I was born and raised in Boulder, Colorado, United States. I'm an enthusiast of the outdoors, during all seasons, usually taking the form of hiking, cycling, and skiing. I'm currently living in Calgary and am enjoying getting to know the parks in Canada.
